Announcement: HIFA2015 Photography Award

3rd March 2010

We are delighted to announce the winners of the Photoshare 6th Annual International Photo Contest and their photos may be seen here.

The Photoshare 6th Annual International Photo Contest was hosted by the Knowledge for Health project (K4Health) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in collaboration with the Global Healthcare Information Network/HIFA2015. Open to amateurs and professionals, the contest drew interest from around the globe, including about 300 participants who submitted close to 1,200 photos captured in 82 countries.

The winner of the HIFA2015 Photography Award (Category: Healthcare Providers) is Ben Barber from USAID: ‘A woman, pregnant with her fifth child, listens as a volunteer health worker tells her about
sanitation, health and the preparation for delivery in Nepal.’

Judges commented: ‘I like the combination of featuring a healthcare provider, physical ‘information’ in the form of the flipchart, and the fact that the healthcare provider is dressed in similar clothes to the pregnant woman.’ ‘It is a lovely composition which conveys a relationship between the 2 women and when you read the caption it underlines that so much of health care provision is simply conveying
good information to engage and empower people, especially women to help themselves and care for their families; and the role of volunteers in this who are trusted by communities, trained by
professional health workers and given an appropriate tool/visual aid.’

Our warm congratulations to Ben Barber, who will receive a Canon SLR camera (sponsored by Global Healthcare Information Network).

There were 10 categories in the Photoshare Contest:

- Healthcare Providers (HIFA2015 Photography Award)

The winners of the 10 categories went to a final round of judging, and the overall winner is Somenath Mukhopadhyay, whose photo shows a young girl suffering from malaria in the village of Birbhum, India.
Congratulations to Somenath Mukhopadhyay, who will receive a Canon SLR camera plus US$1000 (sponsored by Knowledge for Health).

Our thanks to everyone who entered the competition! Your photos will be included in the Photoshare
